Costa Rica National Surf Team Finish 4th at El Sudamericano del Surf 2025 in Chicama Peru

La Sele de Surf Costa Rica, Chicama, Peru

Costa Rica’s National Surf Team finished fourth overall in Chicama, Peru at El Sudamericano del Surf 2025. Over 300 athletes from 12 countries competed in the event from May 6th through 11th on the heels of the Olas Pro Tour. Chicama boasts the longest recorded left wave in the world. Additionally, five of Costa Rica’s athletes earned individual medals, including the gold medal for the Open Men’s category.

Both Mikela Castro and Koa Bryant earned medals for the second year in a row for the Sub 12 category, in the boy’s and girl’s divisions respectfully. The two young athletes hail from Limon on the east coast of the Pura Vida country. Furthermore, they compete on Costa Rica’s National Surfing Circuit, which consists of five different contests each month from January through May.

Mikela currently holds first place ranking in three categories: Girls, Grommets and Mini grommets. Impressively, the young charger regular competes in five categories in the circuit including Open Women and Junior Women in addition to the three categories she leads. Furthermore, the young surfer from Limon earned second place and a silver medal for sub 12 girls at the Olas Pro Tour. The Olas Pro took place at Chicama prior to El Sudamericano. Being a goofy-footed surfer (frontside foot stance faces the left) surely can be an advantage at Chicama.

Koa Bryant earned the bronze medal for sub 12 boys.

Closing Notes

At the time of writing this article, several of Costa Rica’s National Surf Team are competing in the Alas Global Tour in Huanchaco, Peru. Another chance for some of Costa Rica’s finest watermen (and women) to shine on a world class wave.

Next stop on the National Surfing Circuit Banco Lafise 2025 will be at Playa Nosara/Guiones from May 23-25 . Registration is still open. The Final Event of the Circuito Nacional will take place in Playa Hermosa in June.

In closing, the Federation of Surf Costa Rica thanks the parents of the families, the surfing associations and sponsors for making the trip to Peru possible. Special thanks to Banco Lafise for providing the National Surf Team with their “super chiva” uniforms.

Congratulations to all the athletes for your outstanding performances and continuing to raise the name of Costa Rica in the world of surfing.
